Alopecia areata is a condition that causes hair loss, often in small patches on the scalp. It is an auto-immune disorder in which the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss. Alopecia may also affect areas of the body apart from the scalp where hair grows, such as eyebrows and eyelashes. Alopecia can occur at any age, and while there is no known cure, there are treatments that can help to manage symptoms and encourage hair re-growth.
Female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, or natural thinning, Is a common type of hair loss that affects women. It is believed to be caused by genetic and hormonal factors, and is exemplified by a slow thinning of hair at the crown and the top of the head.
The exact cause of female pattern baldness is not fully established, but is believed to be linked to a sensitivity to androgens, which are male hormones that are also present in women. Androgens can bind to hair follicles and may cause them to shrink, leading to shorter, finer hair and eventually, no hair growth.
Female pattern baldness typically starts with a widening of the center parting and a reduction in the total volume of hair. Hair loss may also occur at the sides of the scalp and temple. Unlike male pattern baldness, which often results in a completely bald crown, women with female pattern baldness often retain their frontal hairline.
There are several treatments for female pattern baldness, including medications which can help slow down or even reverse hair loss in some women. Wearing hair systems, or using hair styling techniques to create the illusion of thicker hair, will also help to manage the appearance of female pattern baldness.
