Causes of Hair Loss – Chemotherapy

Hello, and welcome to this video talk about Chemotherapy-related hair loss, presented by London Hair System. Before we proceed, please note that this video is provided for informational purposes only, and Nothing in it constitutes advice. Chemotherapy is a treatment in which medicine is used to kill cancer. There are many different types of chemotherapy medicines, but all of them essentially aim to stop cancer from reproducing and spreading through the body. The drugs used in chemotherapy are effective because they are specifically designed to attack rapidly dividing cells, including cancer cells.

However, there are other rapidly dividing cells in the body which are not cancerous, such as the cells in hair follicles, and unfortunately these cells are sometimes also affected by the drugs. When this is the case, the outcome is interference with the normal cycle of hair growth.

Hair growth occurs in three stages: anagen, which is active growth, catagen, which is transitional growth, and telogen, which is resting. During anagen, hair follicles actively produce hair shafts, and the hair grows longer. During catagen, hair growth slows down, and the hair follicle begins to shrink. Finally, during telogen, the hair follicle remains dormant, and the hair eventually falls out.

Chemotherapy drugs can interrupt this cycle by causing hair follicles to enter the telogen phase prematurely, which results in hair loss. Additionally, chemotherapy can damage the hair shafts, making them brittle and fragile. The severity of hair loss can vary significantly, depending upon the type and dosage of chemotherapy drugs used, as well as the individual’s sensitivity to those drugs.

Not all chemotherapy drugs cause hair loss, but when it does occur, the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and other parts of the body may be affected. Hair loss caused by chemotherapy is usually temporary, and may begin a few weeks after treatment gets underway. Hair typically starts to re-grow a few months after treatment ends.

For women who are experiencing the challenge of hair loss due to chemotherapy, the fitting of a hair system can provide a restored physical appearance, boosting their confidence and self-esteem during a difficult time.
