Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her menstrual periods cease, due to lower hormone levels. It usually affects women between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can happen earlier. Hair loss is a symptom that many women experience during this time. Let’s look at the reasons for that.
Firstly, Estrogen is a hormone that helps to promote hair growth and maintain healthy hair. During menopause, levels of estrogen decrease, which can lead to a reduction in hair thickness and an increase in hair shedding. Estrogen also helps to protect hair follicles from damage, and therefore its decline can leave them more vulnerable.
Secondly, aging, which of course coincides with menopause, can be a factor. As a woman grows older, her follicles may become smaller and produce finer, more fragile hair. Thirdly, Stress, which unfortunately is also common during menopause, can worsen the problem. Stress hormones can impact on the hair growth cycle and lead to increased shedding.
While hair loss during menopause can be distressing, there are treatments that can help to manage symptoms. For example, Hormone replacement therapy, also known by its acronym HRT, can help to replace estrogen levels and improve hair growth. For women who are experiencing the challenge of significant hair loss during menopause, the fitting of a hair system can provide a restored physical appearance, boosting their confidence and self-esteem during a difficult time.
