Stress is how a person responds when they feel a pressure or threat, or when they find themselves in a situation that they don’t feel they can adequately manage or control.
Symptoms and signs of stress vary significantly, but may include irritability, anger, and impatience, or feelings of being overwhelmed. Some people who go through severe stress may even experience suicidal feelings.
Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe. Everyone has feelings of anxiety occasionally, which is a normal part of life.
However some people experience sustained anxiety, which can affect their day to day lives. Anxiety is the principal symptom of conditions such as panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder.
Stress and anxiety can contribute to hair loss in several ways. Let’s look at some examples. Firstly, Telogen effluvium is a type of hair loss that occurs when stress causes hair follicles to prematurely enter the resting phase of the hair growth cycle. Another example is Alopecia, which is an autoimmune condition. Stress can trigger autoimmune responses which are damaging to hair follicles.
A third example is trichotillomania – stress or anxiety can exacerbate the hair pulling urges that trichotillomania sufferers experience. Another example is that Stress can cause nutrient deficiencies, including deficiencies of vitamin B-12 and iron, which are important for hair growth.
When people are stressed or anxious, they may be less focused on self-care and might neglect good hair care routines. Stress-related hair loss is often temporary. Hair growth tends to resume once the underlying stress or anxiety is gone.
It’s important to control stress levels to stay healthy. Techniques which can help include regular exercise, good quality sleep, counselling, and support from friends and family. For a woman who is suffering hair loss, wearing a high quality hair system can restore her physical appearance and improve her confidence.
