Trichotillomania, sometimes informally referred to as T.T.M, is a mental health condition characterised by an incessant and irresistible urge to pull out one’s own hair, usually from the scalp, eyebrows, or eyelashes. It is generally deemed to be a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder, which comes with feelings of tension or anxiety before pulling the hair, and a sense of relief or pleasure after the hair has been pulled out.

Trichotillomania is more common in women than in men, and typically begins in childhood or adolescence. It can be a chronic condition which is highly challenging to overcome, and can cause serious distress and impairment in social, occupational, and other aspects of life.

Treatment for trichotillomania typically involves a combination of behavioural therapy and medication. Cognitive-behavioural therapy can help individuals learn to anticipate and control their hair-pulling urges, while medications can help to lower the underlying anxiety and depression that sufferers often experience.

Support groups can also be helpful for individuals with this condition, as they provide a sense of community and common understanding, and can offer tips and strategies for managing the affliction. For women whose head of hair has been damaged by their trichotillomania urges, the wearing of a hair system can provide a restored physical appearance, in turn making a contribution to their overall mental health, well being and confidence.
